Session 04 · Action

From Spatial Data to Social Action

Community Engagement and Activism

About this session

Having examined representation, place differences, and responsibility in the third session, we now ask how these concerns can inform research conducted with communities. Through Standing Rock, Black Businesses Matter, The Global Refugee Atlas, and Shifting Spatialities of LGBTQ Life, we explore how community knowledge and collaboration can reshape research questions, interpretations, and the use of findings. These projects offer ways to connect critique with care and social action. We consider what they can teach Critical GeoAI about participation, visibility, and accountability, bringing the series back to the question of whose lives and relationships we want these technologies to support. 通过 Standing Rock、Black Businesses Matter、The Global Refugee Atlas,以及

Questions for discussion

  1. How do community knowledge and collaboration change research questions and interpretations?
  2. When does visibility support a community, and when might it expose people to harm?
